Growing up in the West, I first became interested in art in the 1940’s when my parents took me to art galleries, shows and competitions at the State Fair. As a young person, I was amazed at the emotion a painting could evoke and the story a single painting could tell.
As a “City Kid”, I always enjoyed the outdoors and the country life. Farms, ranches, livestock, horses, and people who lived the rural lifestyle fascinated me, especially the cowboys.
I worked in commercial photography for many years and operated my own portrait and commercial studios for the better part of 15 years.
The interest in producing meaningful art outside of photography never left me. I was significantly influenced by one of my clients, Arnold Friberg.
I started painting in the late 1970’s and attended some excellent workshops over the years with wonderfully talented artists. I knew that being self-taught was a fantasy. Additionally, I believed, if I really knew how to paint, I could paint anything. I painted as an avocation for 20 years and regularly for the last 10 years.
I prefer working in a painterly style as opposed to photo-realism. I’m interested in sharing my personal impressions of our real world and to create paintings of significance that communicate with the viewer.
